Prof Mobolanle Oniya

Prof. Mobolanle Oladipo Oniya was born at Ibadan, Oyo state to a nuclear family of Elder Femi Oniya, a university administrator at the time (now retired). He joined the services of The Federal University of Technology, Akure in 2000 as a trained Parasitologist from the University of Ibadan where obtained his B.Sc (Zoology), M.Sc (Parasitology) and Ph.D (Parasitology) in 1995, 1998 and 2008 respectively. He developed a flair for university scholarship early in life and stayed within the corridor of the ivory tower from then till date. He is a teacher, researcher and community servant with a lot of impact. He has been an active member of PPSN for over eighteen years. He started the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Chapter of the society in 2005 and the branch has grown strong and always a visible contingent at our annual conferences. He was pioneer Branch Chairperson of PPSN in FUTA (2005-2011), Zonal Coordinator, PPSN South west (2011-2016) Under his coordination, FUTAbranch, hosted a memorable PPSN conference in 2012 and the memories still linger with the phrase……..this is Akure! He was also the LOC Chairman of the wonderful conference held in Abeokuta in 2016.He has been a consistent and active member of PPSN and presently coordinates the Ondo state wing of My Society.

He started out as a Lecturer, Part-Time, University of Ibadan, Ibadan (1998-2000) and was later appointed an Assistant Lecturer, Biology Department, Federal University of Technology, Akure. (November, 2000- September, 2004). He rose diligently through the ranks and served the university and department in various capacities including Examination Officer (Biology Department, 2004 to 2010), Field Trip Coordinator (Biology Department, 2006 to 2014),Coordinator, Pre Degree Science Programme, FUTA (2005 to 2012), Representative, School of Sciences in Sports Council(2007 to 2021), Editorial Assistant, Journal of Research in Science and Management (2005 to 2009), Representative of Congregation in Senate (2008 to 2010),Representative of Congregation in University Housing Committee (2008 to 2012), Programme Assistant, Pre Degree Science Programme (2010 to 2012), Member, Business Committee of School of Sciences 2010 to 2021, Member, SOS Field Trip and Industrial Visit Committee (2010 to 2019), Postgraduate Coordinator, Biology Department (2011 to 2014), Team Leader, Sports Committee, School of Sciences (2015 to 2019), Ag Head, Department of Biology (2019 to 2020), Head, Department of Biology, January 2021 to 2023. He was a visiting lecturer to the University of Ibadan, his alma mater, from March 2014 to March 2015 and currently at Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko. He was appointed Professor of Parasitology and Public Health in 2019.

Prof Oniya has supervised over 80 B.Sc. and 25 M.Sc. Dissertations and 10 Ph.D theses. He has also served as external examiner at the postgraduate level to the Department of Pure and Applied Zoology, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta as well as the Department of Zoology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Department of Zoology, University of Lagosand Department of Zoology, University of Ibadan amongst others Prof Oniya is an astute teacher and researcher, a reviewer for several onshore and offshore journals, a public commentator and motivational speaker. He has delivered several papers at workshops and conferences with several publications in local and international peer reviewed journals. His research focus is centrally on the epidemiology and control of Neglected Tropical Diseases [NTDs] and Public health.He has worked extensively on the epidemiology and control of Schistosomiasis in Ondo state, a feat that earned his appointment as Chairman, Ondo state Advisory Committee on Neglected Tropical Diseases NTDs) from 2013 till date. The efforts of committee are steering the state committee on NTDs aright. Prof. Oniya is also a seasoned comrade of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the only standing trade union in the defense of our ivory tower. He was Financial Secretary ASUU-FUTA (2007 to 2010), Secretary, ASUU-FUTA (2011 to 2013), Vice Chairperson, ASUU-FUTA (2013 to 2015), Chairperson, ASUU-FUTA (2015 to 2019). He very active in the Union and exudes a tall passion for the overhaul of our educational system viz- a- viz funding, provision of adequate infrastructure and conducive atmosphere and a living wage for Scholars.

He is a principled disciplinarian and the inventor of Sacgriculture, a specialized farming technique using sacks for a variety of crops. Prof. M.O. Oniya is happily married to Mrs. Matilda Motunrayo Oniya and they are blessed with three daughters.
